Custard and blancmange.

To make a Custard

A Custard the coffin [pastry case] must be first be hardened in the oven, and then take a quarte of cream and five or six yolks of eggs and beat them well together, and put them into the cream, and put in sugar and small raisins and dates sliced and put into the coffin butter or else marrow, but on the fish days put in butter.

To make Blancmange

Take a capon and cut out the brawn of him alive and parboil the brawn till the flesh come from the bone, and then dry him as dry as you can, in a fair cloth, then take a pair of cards and card him as small as is possible, and then take a bottle of milk and a bottle of cream, and half a pound of Rye flour and your carded brawn of the capon, and put all into a pan, and stir it all together and set it upon the fire, and when it begins to boil put there half a pound of beaten sugar and a saucer-full of rosewater, and so let it boil till it be very thick, then put it into a charger till it be cold and then you may slice it as you do a carcase and so serve it in.

This recipe is just amazing as well as a hell of a lot of work.

Wildflower Patch

I sowed the seed at the end of May and now they are nearly all in flower. They have certainly brightened up the patch where previously we had this huge horizontal fir tree that died in our severe winter. This tree was there when we came to Salisbury and so it was over 20 years old. The soil left behind was naturally very low in nutrients and so perfect for a wild-flower patch. And so it has proved so far.
What will happen next year is anyone's guess. Some are perennials.

Taken in Jan 2009 whilst the Angel was still flying. This image has a reflection in the new font. Water is pouring from spouts at each 'corner'. The verticals have been corrected and then the photo turned into a sketch.

Today we have had a little snow. Naturally the country has ground to a halt. I took this pic early this morning, The temperature was still below zero. It only reached plus one. The snow kept falling through the day and we are questioning whether we should go out tonight to the camera club. We should be having Army Combat Photographers coming. They will not wimp out of course. So we have to go.

This is a pic that I took from across the road. I liked the woman with the push chair looking jealously towards our house. The grounds extend from the extreme left to the ox-eye daisies on the right and to the summerhouse peeping out on the left of the house. The trees behind are merely a backdrop and also prevent the sun from shining on the summerhouse. The path coming in from the left down which the woman and child have just traversed goes into the woodland. The path splits in several ways one of which goes round to the right and up behind our house.

This was taken across Roger's farm on the road to Nunton village in the valley in the distance.
It was taken by locking on the exposure for the sky and then using a fill in flash for the foreground.

Boat Race Day

I judged a photographic exhibition today and the one thing that was clear was that there are now more entries that are purely digital than film derived. It also meant that there were more entries overall. This in turn meant that it took me longer than normal to write notes for each entry. On these notes I try to get the entrants to understand how to take better photos and better presentation. The quality of entries does seem to have improved over the years.
It was raining when I left the judging and so I just dashed into the churchyard and took 2 snaps. The first was of these new graves bright and cheery with spring flowers but also rather sad.
The second one was the rather curious pigeon permanently perched on a headstone. What is it trying to eat.

The window of this thatched cottage is so thick I had to photograph it. This photo is a combination of two pictures. The camera focussed on the twigs in the foreground first. So I had to take another carefully focussing on the window frame. A slight vignette has been added.

Fiona will recognise this Magnolia flower. They are now at their peak. I liked the background here. Generally magnolia flowers are on their own and so the background can be distracting.

Even here we have graffiti as seen here. I was struck by the areas of light and shade forming a design in itself.

And here are some stalactites in the middle of Harnham! They hang from some old garage roofs. Tony should know these.

I thought it would be a good idea to get out early today because the weather forecast was for rain later. I also thought I would take a few long lens abstract images. For this purpose I went round the local church and these are the images I found. All are uncropped but various filters have been applied.
1. The first one has had the Buzz filter with the Watercolour setting applied and then faded by using Overlay mode.

2. The second one is of the tool shed with Flaming Pear Pixel Trash filter in the West mode.

3. Finally a photo of the east wall with a cross in the foreground and with the Flaming Pear Flood filter applied. Again one of the many modes was used so that the water is slightly transparent was employed.

A day of catching up. The morning was spent gardening - mainly pruning.
Then a quick trip out to take some photos. Met Maggie and Fiona. Managed to persuade Maggie to pose. I removed some graffiti from the wall.

In the churchyard I thought that the 2 gravestones were picturesque with their fresh daffodils.

Easter Monday 24th March

On this day we went for a 5 mile walk with the Chiselbury Grove Strollers. This is a picture of the doomed Post Office at Whitsbury.
During our walk we came to a paddock with several foals and mares. We were informed that each foal was worth in the region of £200,000 each! Here I have made a posterized monochrome image with 4 tones.

Snow this morning and so I tried to capture it falling. I tried first straight and then I added flash. This had the effect of lighting the flakes near to the camera. In some cases they were so big and bright that it looked like a fault. These are untainted pictures.

Later in the day the weather changed so that we had lovely clouds and plenty of sun. Below is a photograph that was put through the kaleidoscope filter of a fence across the river Bourne [normally this river is dry here i.e. Newton Toney]. The water is the blue bits.

In one small sunny moment I dashed out and grabbed a picture of this tulip and our bench whose slats were casting interesting shadows.

Motorcycle Abstracts

It amazes me what one can make of a mundane subject. I went out to find a topic for today and saw our neighbour and he had his machine standing on his driveway. I asked if I could photograph it close up. He was only too pleased. He even moved it to a more better angle for me. It is a 1000cc machine capable of 150mph. Anyway I took just 5 pictures. Then came home and played with them for a time. I especially liked the kaleidoscope blended versions [5, 6, 7 and 10]. I found that you need to boost the unsharp mask up to 250% to bring out fine details.

I have left some of the images as taken. Can you work out which of the other images started out like these?

A Cottage and Fruit Flasks

We went into the city and en route went past this cottage that is being renovated but the state it is in has been so for a long time. This is two images stitched together using Cs3 Photomerge. This is a great improvement on previous panorama programmes from Adobe.
Then in what was in the window of a cafe that replaced the famous Beeches bookshop I attempted to photograph the big flasks. There are so many reflections that it is virtually impossible.

A busy day. Morning the U3A Extra class kept is busy until after 1pm by the time we had put everything away.
So a modest set of pictures. Two of Lungwort now at its best although small and a apline stonecrop that is a gorgeous red at present.

A wet miserable day today. So a couple of indoor pics. First a silver fruit bowl taken on a tablecloth. The first is treated to the kaleidoscope filter [copy mode] and the second made with mosaic filter [Alien Skin].

Chionodoxa & Roses & Crowns

I had to go into the city today with my Treasurer's hat and my cycle hat on too in the wind on my bicycle in order to bank the camera clubs small change that was becoming a literal burden to me. It weighed an amazing amount for such a small value.
En route I went past our local inn and took a wide angle snap of the crest over the front door. It was curiously smashed. Must be the gales we have been having.
Or was it the drink causing me to see in triplicate?
I had to go past the museum and in the grounds was a grand display of Chionodoxa plants. Here I have treated them to a diamond gradient with pastel colours and then a dull green colour overlay. Finally I used a mask to paint back some flowers that lay outside the diamond. Another link HERE

Three Photos and Seven Images

Only went into the back garden for todays images. I took 3 photos in all. Two of wet paving slabs and one of a rather dead bird feeding house. I then set off to show how wet these were and then go on to use various filters to "improve" them further. Well when all you have are rather dull images you have to try out something special.

This used Jig Saw Puzzle filter follwed by Mura Meister's Random (v-line) Spiral filter

I applied the Cracks filter here.

Here I used Pixel Trash filter.

AND finally the Tiny Wet House. The small house that was only ever decoration. Birds disdained it totally and who can blame them?

A Windy Day with Gales in Places

Today has been blustery but not as bad as the weather forecasters would have us believe [as usual]. At least round here. This was taken on digital compact camera because it was to hand. I still managed to convey the wind I hope. This is actually two photos blended together.

A couple of Grotesque stone carvings that I found on an old building in Harnham [OLD SCHOOL, 2 NETHERHAMPTON ROAD]. This building is listed as Grade 2 by English Heritage. See HERE for more details and a photograph.
They are described as dogs in the listing!

A strange selection today. The first one is of two women chatting on a bench in the Old George Mall in front the Accessorize shop.The second one is more daffodils - this time contre jour. Pure white daffs are difficult to expose correctly but I think I have managed it here more by luck than judgment.
Finally a close up of a bit of London Plane tree bark. It struck me as a bit like a monster of possibly some embroidery as in the second version. This was made from the top one by using the tachyon filter. It is good to find a use for such an obscure thing.

A BIG day today. I was up and off early [i.e. 8.10 am] and walked to the station to catch the 8.45 to Waterloo and then on to St Pancras and then walk to Greys Inn Road for a meeting. The meeting was for Subject Co-ordinators for which I represent the Photography part.
Anyway it was a grand opportunity to take a few photos in the refurbished St Pancras station. What a superb place it is now. International trains leave from here now. The platforms for these trains are behind the glass panels behind the man admiring the Sir John Betjeman statue.

Whilst there we went into the church. This is a detail of the Pulpit. Beautifully carved. This a kaleidoscopic version of it.

Today I took just two pictures. One of a periwinkle close up & sadly unsharp. The other the letter E also no sharp!
Clearly I had to disguise my failings and here are the results.
The E has had Mehdi Vibrations filter followed by the Tiles filter set to 4 tiles and 10% offset.
The Periwinkle went through cropping and then Medhi Kaleidoscope filter followed by the Wave filter. In addition a quick brush with the Smudge tool. What beauty.

Today we went on a 5 mile walk around Rockbourne and Whitsbury. Lovely walk and a lovely day to do this. Basically we did this as a recce for the Chiselbury Grove Strollers Easter walk in 3 weeks time, This was a normal field until I flooded it. I liked the stubble edge on going over the crest.

Sheila and I are doing this because we set this idea for our U3A students and so we thought that we had better join in too. Then at the end of the month the idea is to produce a printed book with one page per day. These are to be A5 or so in size.

New Year's Day Stroll

Today I managed together some people from our street to go for short walk near the village of Coombe Bissett. There were seven of us in all. This included two people who are new to our street called Giselle and Jerry. After our walk we invited them to our house for nibbles and drinks. This went down very well.
Here is one of the pictures I took today. The weather was dull and cool. Slightly damp under foot in places. The ford here is quite deep - at least 4 feet.

Here are a couple of photos I took whilst collecting the newspaper. I went through woods behind our dwelling and took a picture from above. This is the clearest view and as you can see there are many branches and trunks in the way.

The second is from the best view of the south face of St Mary's Cathedral on a lovely clear day. Temperature about 8 deg C and no wind.

The top image is a surreal version of the happenings on the Cheshire canal system. A combination of 3 pictures blended together.

The middle image is another montage of two photos of the Anderton boat lift with a man for scale.

This image is an amalgam of three photos taken on Cheshire earlier this year. These were all canal based. So you can see the lock keeper opening the lock gate and the end elevation of a building by the lock and a bridge with some text painted thereon many years before. Also another image of a narrow boat that was passing through. Whether this type of montage is to your liking it is quite enjoyable making them. It may do well in camera club competitions but that is not paramount in my mind. That is the enjoyment of making an image that satisfies.

Orchid Mania?

Yesterday we had a little do for the members of our U3A Digital Imaging advanced class. We set up several places for them to take still lives. One of these was the orchid Sheila bought back in April and that has been flowering continuously ever since. Currently it has more flowers than ever. It is quite florifluous! Here are a couple of photos I took during that morning of the orchids close up. The arrangement had a big picture frame covered in white tissue paper set in front of a window - hence the white background to the pictures. Do click on the photos to get a larger view.
